DETROIT – Community leaders, church pastors and citizen activists met in Detroit at St. Peters Episcopal Church recently to discuss company raids and deportation of Latino immigrants from the United States.
Calling the raids an attack on due process and human rights, the group has galvanized support for a May 1 protest.
Latinos Unidos/United De Michigan (LUUM) organized the meeting and speakers addressed the common ground between the Latino and African American communities in Detroit and nationwide.
Speakers included Dawoud Muhammed, Michigan Representative of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan; Pastor Walter Coleman of the Adalberto United Methodist Church in Chicago; Detroit City Councilmember JoAnn Watson, and labor activist Elena Herrada.
